Verizon Mifi — A Year Later

Well, here it is almost a year later and i am still loving the Verizon 3G Mifi. It just works. I haven’t had to mess with it at all. I just keep it charged and drop it in my laptop bag whenever i leave the house. It has also proved to be a great road companion with a car charger for long road trips. Given that I get all the hand-me-down electronics in our household, I have the oldest iPhone, yes the terrible first gen edge, so I often use mifi to power my iPhone. I have also used it well when traveling to grandma’s house where the Internet is, well, you don’t want the Internet at grandma’s house. One other use that I haven’t mentioned is as a backup net connection for my home network. Amazingly, Comcast has had zero outages lasting more than a few seconds  in the past year. …silence…. Yes, it’s true. Not a single outage of consequence. Knock on wood, but it is good to know that I can get to the net with Mifi if i have to.

To sum, although the $275 price tag on a piece of plastc seemed a bit crazy up front, i have no contract, get solid 3G device agnostic performance, and couldn’t be happier.  Movirng forward, I am eyeing 3G/4G capable Android phones with wifi hotspot. If the throughput is comparable, i would trade my black plastic card for a phone and stop having to carry around so many Inspector Gadget-like devices.
